I have over 20 years experience as a speech and language therapist. My specialist knowledge of children and young adults with language processing difficulties and associated disorders has been deepened by longer-term working with them in mainstream language resource, special school and college settings as they approach and enter adulthood. My therapy work always considers and brings understanding to the broader implications of language and communication difficulties - of how much of life they can shape now and in the future. As a therapist, my approach is collaborative, functional and forward-looking.
As a supervisor, my close listening, ability to create the feeling of being in a safe space, and training to all levels of the ‘intandem’ supervision courses, inform an attentive, thoughtful and lively approach. I was part of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists advisory group that contributed to the profession’s new Supervision Guidelines.
I am as at home with teachers and youth mentors and mental health workers as with speech and language therapists and young adults. I’ve worked as part of multi-disciplinary teams throughout my career and am no stranger to the many benefits and occasional challenges of collaborative working. My pro bono work to make mental health provision meaningfully accessible to young adults with language processing difficulties is a key element in my portfolio of activities as an independent practitioner.
